Abstract:
Penny postcards were introduced in the United States in 1873, by Post Master John Creswell. This postcard is of Rancho Camulos made famous by Helen Hunt Jackson in the her 1884 book, Ramona. Though Jackson's story is intended to depict an 1840's adobe, Rancho Camulos was not completed until after the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861.
