The Emergence of Form through Process as a Central Theme of Large Clay Vessels

This body of work consists of large, coil-built ceramic vessels that present the viewer with evidence of the process of their construction. The layered textures reflect the action of my hands working the clay and my body moving around the forms. The vessels also reference my body in their scale, and with their anthropomorphic gestures. The vessels are installed in the gallery so that their curving gestures create a tension between the forms, an image of bodies conversing or playing or dancing with each other. The vessels individually and as a group physically engage the viewers by drawing them into the twisting spaces between the forms to investigate the surfaces and interiors. These vessels, with their human scale and gestures, reinterpret the vessel's traditional references to the body, contributing to the meaning of vessel as a ceramic object and a sculptural form.
