The purpose of this qualitative research was to explore barriers that Latino/s
undocumented student’s face when pursing a college degree. The complexities these students
experience from applying to college, receiving aid to fund their education, and campus
involvement were examined through the narratives of three students who are enrolled at a public,
four-year institution in Southern California. Additionally, two faulty members and four staff
members were interviewed to gain insight into the stories undocumented students share with
them during their educational experience. The data collected in this study provides researchers
with a glimpse into the lives of the student’s “living in the shadows” as one participant describes,
during their college endeavors. The study uncovered several factors that were critical to these
students’ college experiences: admissions, financial aid, social support and campus involvement.
In addition students, faculty, and staff offer suggestions on how institutions and educators can
provide support for undocumented students. |
